Like, καθώς κτλ.

We've had occasion heretofore to note the curious usage of καθώς in some GNT texts, notably the opening sequence of Ephesians. Some others like myself who find the process of linguistic change in Koine Greek and in colloquial American English to be fascinating may want to take a look at an item on this morning’s New York Times Op-Ed page:

οὔτοι ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς πάντα θεοὶ θνητοῖς ὑπέδειξαν,
ἀλλὰ χρόνῳ ζητέοντες ἐφευρίσκουσιν ἄμεινον. (Xenophanes, Fragment 16)

As to another meaning of this ubiquitous particle in the speech of today's youth, I've been thinking that the quotative like functions like the ὄτι recitativum.

Another interesting particle I have noticed is the use of "just" in extemporaneous prayer, e.g. "Heavenly father, we just pray that you would just..." In a former church of mine, this was very common, and was hard to ignore once I noticed it.

One of my first Greek teachers described the use of δε to us as "It's like the California, like, bimbo, like, shrug, like" (with appropriate facial and body expressions)

There are some letters to the editor in this morning's NYT in response to the original item cited at the beginning of this thread: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/11/opini ... in-em.html.
