Re: Introduction

Post by Devenios Doulenios »

I've been reading Lucian's Dialogues of the Gods in Greek off and on for the past year or so. Am about halfway thru. It's not too difficult for me. I'm using the pdf edition by Hayes and Nimis. They have some good vocabulary and grammar helps at the bottom of each page. It's basically the same format Geoffrey Steadman uses for his readers if you're familiar with his work.

How does the reading level of The Ass in Greek compare to the Dialogues?

The Ass is easier or comparable to Dialogues of the Gods in Greek. Its narrative style is more straightforward, with fewer abstract ideas, making it a smooth read if you’re comfortable with Lucian’s dialogues. Give it a try—its quirky plot might even make for lighter reading.

Sounds good. Is there an open access/free edition online? Preferably one with vocab and grammar helps, but that's not a must.
I have Diogenes with LSJ lexicon and BDAG, which I can consult if needed.

While we're talking about Lucian, is his True History about the same reading level as The Ass and The Dialogues?

Are you asking about the Ass? There's http://lucianofsamosata.info/downloads/ ... t_2012.pdf
More generally, there's http://lucianofsamosata.info/wiki/doku. ... ianingreek
Or there's Perseus https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/co ... reco-Roman which has each word hyperlinked.

Hi Ken,

Sorry, I should have made my question more specific. I was asking about Lucian's True History in the last post.

Thanks, Ken. It turns out that Faenum Publishing (faenumpublishing.com) also has editions of the True Story. They offer a paperback one for $13.95 USD, and a free pdf. Their editions do offer the vocab and grammar helps I asked about. They accompany each page of Greek text.

The publisher states that Lucian's Greek is for intermediate level Greek readers.
