Hi, I'm David McCollough and I'm a research student at London School of Theology working on Christian initiation in Luke-Acts. Right now I am trying to figure out if didotai in Acts 8:18 is a historical present or a case of metalepsis in the narrative. Two possible reasons why it's not an HP are from Classical Greek: 1) HPs are rare in the Passive 2) HPs are rare in subordinate clauses. See Rijksbaron, A. (2006) “On false historic presents in Sophocles (and Euripides)” in Sophocles and the Greek Language: Aspects of Diction, Syntax and Pragmatics (Lieden: Brill, 2006), 131. Mt 27:38 is an example that somewhat counteracts point 1 above, but there is still point 2. I would love to know how much these Classical Greek principles carry over into Koine!
All the best,
David
