General question about future editions of the AF

Post by PhillipLebsack »

I was a bit late in finding out (and sad in doing so) that Holmes passed away in 2016 (may he rest in peace in the Lord).

Holmes left us with his The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations in the 3rd edition. But it is already a bit dated. I saw some new fragments were discovered of The Shepherd, for instance, since the third edition, and I know more textual work on the AF could be done, particularly when considering new developments in textual criticism... I'm curious if anyone here knows of any efforts to update Holmes' text or to produce a newer edition of the Greek text of the AF?

Are you sure about Holmes being dead? I see that google lists that on the sidebar, but according to Bethel's site, and numerous other sites, he is still alive and active. As for a new edition, I have no idea.

I enquired of some of my contacts at Baker, and they told me there are plans, but it depends on Holmes's time to do it. So, no definite timetable right now.

I'm desperately trying not to make a joke about him editing the NRSVue from BEYOND THE GRAVE.

That's funny...

Google definitely gave me the impression he passed away. I had a hard time finding anything he published after 2016. But I'm glad to know he is still alive. This is wonderful!

Absolutely! His edition of the AF was the first modern one I read. Previously read the old Loeb ed by Lake. (I also have pdf one of Lightfoot, but haven't used it yet.) I hope his time and health permit him to do an update. I'm impressed with his work. The SBL Greek NT he edited is also an excellent resource.

Is the new MS fragment available online yet?
