Temporal relation - Irenaus Contra Haereses

Post by Peter Streitenberger »

Dear Friends of Greek,

I'd like to hear your comments on the following passage: "KAI DIA TOUTO, EN TW TELEI AQROWS ENTEUQEN THS EKKLHSIAS ANALAMBANOMENHS, ESTAI, FHSIN, QLIYIS, hOIA OUK EGENETO AP' ARCHS OUD' OU MH GENHTAI". (Contra Haereses, 5.Book, 29.Chapter)

An English translation gives this rendering: "And therefore, when in the end the Church shall be suddenly caught up from this, it is said, „There shall be tribulation such as has not been since the beginning, neither shall be.“

I'm concerned about the temporal relation between the Genitivus absolutus "THS EKKLHSIAS ANALAMBANOMENHS" and the main verb "ESTAI". Are this two clauses at the same time or does the first one preceed the main clause ? That means is the Church caught up during the tribulation occurs or is the tribulation after the church is let's say "raptured".
Thank you for *every* comment !
Yours

Is the passage Book 5, Chapter/Fragment 24? Here is the Greek in Unicode:
