Church Fathers online?

Church Fathers online?

Postby Jonathan Robie » May 11th, 2011, 10:25 am

I haven't been able to find electronic texts of the Church Fathers, or web sites containing their writings. Surely someone has made these available?

Where?

Here's one site: http://www.ccel.org/l/lake/fathers/toc.htm
Another from the Université Laval: http://www4.bibl.ulaval.ca/bd/bibp/
I don't know that there are Greek texts here, but: http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/
A Russian site: http://patrologia.narod.ru/patrolog/index.htm
I don't think that's exhaustive, but it might be helpful.

Ah, very helpful indeed. I have a snippet of Greek from Origen that I can now go read in context ...

Documenta Catholica Omnia is my favorite. http://www.documentacatholicaomnia.eu

I am putting together a simple online reader's version of some of the Church father's writings. I am in the VERY early stages, but the first 8 chapters of Ignatius to the Magnesians are up as an beta example. At this point it basically just lists the vocabulary that would be unfamiliar to students of the NT, and parsing for difficult forms. Any feedback (or HELP) would be appreciated!

This site has been referenced already, but I fine that particular URL to be a bit more helpful when trying to find a particular Church Father (it's not in Russian). Also, that site is quite helpful because they've placed many of the volumes of the Patrologia Graeca online in a searchable format (ie, not scanned in images).

It's worth noting that the TLG (Thesaurus Linguae Graecae) has a huge repository of Greek literature accessible online (patristic and classical). Unfortunately, only an abridged portion is available free of charge. Otherwise, you need to subscribe or be associated with an institution that subscribes.
Even so, there are a number of Patristic texts available in the abridged catalog. The TLG also has searching capabilities, though they're not as advanced as something like Accordance.

You can find a lot (including, I think, the whole Migne Patrologia Graeca) here:

I've posted another online Reader, this time for Ignatius to the Romans:

http://www.greekingout.com/new-testamen ... ne-reader/

You can also use this nifty tool by Logos Bible Software's Rick Brannan to look up specific verses in the Apostolic Fathers collection. It uses the standard abbreviations for searching (ie IRom for Ignatius to the Romans, etc.):

Thanks for the link, Refe. I should point out, though, that the server presently requires the 'www.', so the link should be:

http://www.supakoo.com/rick/af.asp?af=IPoly%203

For Ignatius to Polycarp 3 if you type a space it will work, but the URL here requires no spaces, so %20 is used)

You can specify most abbreviations that you can think of, as I recall (I wrote the code seven years ago, so don't remember all the details). You can also specify chapter and verse, and verse ranges within a chapter. No chapter ranges supported. Also, Hermas is not there (didn't want to support the standard verse organization). More details on the lookup tool are here: http://bit.ly/ppOVUB

Maybe someday when I've got all sorts of free time I'll be able to update it, but for now it is what it is.
