The Apostolic Creed
Posted: January 5th, 2012, 7:38 pm
Legend has it the apostles created this creed 10 days after Christ's resurrection (most likely false). The creeds are easy reading and use accusative participles extensively. Rod Decker has the creeds at the end of his reader. The text linked to Perseus LSJ Hopper and parser can be found at http://www.letsreadgreek.com/texts/apostoliccreed/. A pdf with vocabulary can be found at http://www.letsreadgreek.com/texts/apos ... sCreed.pdf. All corrections are posted in that file also. Here is the text (which is also corrected from any previous errors originally posted.)
The earliest attested form can be found in theInterrogatory Creed of Hippolytus found in On the Apostolic Tradition 21.12-18. It reads:
Πιστεύεις εἰς θεόν πατέρα παντοκράτορα;
Πιστεύεις εἰς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν, τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ θεοῦ, τὸν γεννηθέντα διὰ πνεύματος ἁγίου ἐκ Μαρίας τῆς παρθένου, τὸν σταυρωθέντα ἐπὶ Ποντίου Πιλάτου καὶ ἁποθανόντα, καὶ ἀναστάντα τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ζῶντα ἐκ νεκρῶν, καὶ ἀνελθόντα εἰς τοὺς οὐρανού, καὶ καθίσαντα ἐκ δεξιῶν τοῦ πατρός, ἐρχόμενον κρῖναι ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς;
Πιστεύεις εἰς τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἐν τῇ ἁγίᾳ ἐκκλησίᾳ;
English Translation of Apostle's Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic Church;
the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting.
AMEN.
