λαμβάνω and τυγχάνω verbs

How can I best learn new vocabulary items? What aids are there and what pitfalls should be avoided? How does a beginner learn to use a lexicon?

Thanks for that pretty detailed breakdown Stirling! I will try to get through more of Josephus before tackling that, but your approach seems like the right one.

I think Stirling is giving you excellent advice. If I can translate from his linguistic speak, the point is that the more of these words you see in various contexts, the better handle you will get on them. Nothing you are doing to this point is wrong, but let me suggest if time is limited -- let's say you have the choice between reading a few lines of Greek or reviewing vocab cards -- read the Greek as first priority. Now off to follow my own advice!
