Vocabulary Cards Incorporating Pictures

Χαίρετε,

I'm looking for a flashcard set that incorporates pictures. I've seen these available for modern languages, but not ancient Greek. Traditional cards sets or computerized cards are both acceptable.

Thanks,

Wayne Kirk

Χαιρε!

I don't know of any already available set of Greek flashcards with pictures, although Randall Buth's print materials in his intro course of Koine Greek includes pictures (and accompanying audio CD). Here's a link to a demo: http://www.biblicallanguagecenter.com/s ... ek-lesson/

I am working on some materials for myself which I'll be glad to share, using PowerPoints instead of flashcards. Right now I'm working on a set to teach the numbers 1-10. I plan to do a set of four, one for each gender (masculine, feminine, neuter), and one summarizing the case forms and giving examples of usage from the Greek NT. I'm almost finished with the first one, on feminine forms. It uses pictures, animation, and sound files. I use this format for each number: number + color adjective + common, concrete noun. Here's what I have in mind for each gender:

Feminine: red ball
Masculine: brown bread
Neuter: white book (scroll)

That way, you learn the vocab item in a meaningful context, not just as an isolated word.

Thus: μια ερυθρα σφαιρα, δυο ερυθραι σφαιραι, κτλ. (one red ball, two red balls, etc.)

I should have the first set finished in a week or two. Let me know if you would like a copy and provide an email, if so, and I'll be glad to share them.

Update to my previous post on this:

I now have a new blog, Let Ancient Voices Speak, http://letancientvoicesspeak.preachersfiles.com/, which promotes and provides materials for learning Ancient Greek communicatively, utilizing text, pictures, and audio. The site will also include materials for learning Latin, Biblical Hebrew, and Biblical Aramaic with this approach. I am starting off with some basic vocabulary such as you would learn in the first weeks of a modern language course.

The first two of a set of four PowerPoints to teach the numbers 1-10 are now ready, and links to download them are posted.

Here are the shortlinks:

Welcome Post: http://wp.me/p3nw3B-o

Αι σφαιραι (Nos. 1-10, feminines): http://wp.me/p3nw3B-H

Οι αρτοι (Nos. 1-10, masculines): http://wp.me/p3nw3B-1m

I look forward to your feedback and suggestions.

In case you were wondering, yes, I do use accent marks in the actual post titles and in the slide sets. I just left them off here to save time. ;)

Devenios,

Instead of, or in addition to, PowerPoint, may I recommend Anki (http://ankisrs.net/)? It is a powerful flashcard program that supports pictures and audio within flashcards.

If you have a Mac there's a wonderful easy-to-use program called iFlash http://www.loopware.com/iflash/ that can incorporate images and audio as well.
