Theos?

Post by mangfpt »

How do you see the use of "Theos" in the Greek texts, LXX or NT, do you see it applying only to The Almighty God when preceded by "ho," "ton," etc. etc. or not?

Coming here by suggestion, which might be quite good.

Now, to answer your question directly, in general NT Greek prefers to use the article when referring to the one true God, but the article may be omitted in various context for syntactic reasons. It has to be looked at on a case by case basis.

If this is true, what do you think are the consequences?

If it's true that ο θεος (in singular form) is used for the one true god and θεος is preferred for other gods, it's only because the nature of the stories and other discourses. I think you just don't find so many places where LXX uses the singular form of word θεος for some other than Israel's god, and even then it could be "their" or "your" god. Couple of stories come to mind where there are some named or specific gods, we should read them and see if they use the word and how they use it.

τὴν θεὸν at Acts 19.37 is interesting.
