Advice Needed: Patristics

Post by Jonathan Robie »

biblicalhumanities.org also needs a Patristics wishlist - what should we digitize together with Perseus?

They are already planning to do all of Migne's Patrologia Graeca.

We also plan to do the Sophocles lexicon and the Catenae Graecorum patrum in Novum Testamentum (http://archive.org/details/catenaegraecorum01cramuoft) together with them.

What else needs doing?

A Patristic Greek Lexicon G.W.H. Lampe Oxford 1961 would be very useful.

Indeed - but it is still under copyright.

The early volumes of GCS (Die griechischen christlichen Schriftsteller der ersten drei Jahrhunderte) are now in the public domain, and many of them have been digitized. There’s a helpful list (probably not up to date) here:

http://www.roger-pearse.com/weblog/die- ... le-online/

Nearly all of those are still the standard editions of their respective texts.

It’s also worth noting (although this is Latin, of course) that just about all the public domain volumes of Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum have been scanned too:

http://www.earlymedievalmonasticism.org ... norum.html

Field’s standard editions of Chrysostom’s commentaries on Paul would also be desirable. (Field’s Chrysostom Matthew appeared early enough to be reprinted by Migne, but unfortunately the Paul vols were just too late for inclusion there--Migne had to rely on greatly inferior 18th century sources instead.)

Sancti Patris Nostri Joannis Chrysostomi
Interpretatio omnium epistolarum Paulinarum
Ed. Frederick Field
Oxford: Parker

Two volumes from the series have been posted on the Internet Archive:

Vol. 3 (1845)

http://archive.org/details/sanctipatrisnost01john

Vol. 6 (1861)

http://archive.org/details/sanctipatrisnost02john

I know that all the other vols are somewhere on Google Books, because I’ve successfully downloaded them from there, but I can no longer find them. All I remember is that I had to search in some absolutely counterintuitive way (without using any of the words Chrysostom, Chrysostomus, Chrysostomi, or Field). It would probably be easier for USA users. (I’m in Australia, so a lot of Google Books pages are inaccessible to me.)

Afterthought: I thought Perseus already had a good text of the Apostolic Fathers, but looking again, I can't see any. If not, probably the most convenient public domain text would be:

The Apostolic Fathers
ed. and tr. Kirsopp Lake
Loeb Classical Library, 2 vols.
London: Heinemann, 1912-1913

Vol. 1

http://archive.org/details/apostolicfathers01lake

Vol. 2

http://archive.org/details/apostolicfathers02lakeuoft

Lake’s Greek text is already available transcribed into Unicode here:

http://www.ccel.org/l/lake/fathers/toc.htm

Even though it's readily available elsewhere, this seems to me the sort of thing that ought to be at Perseus. (Migne's texts of the Apostolic Fathers are, of course, greatly outdated--there were enormous discoveries in that field in the late 19th century!)

Some of the works on this site http://www.documentacatholicaomnia.eu/ might be able to be considered for inclusion. Perhaps the Byzantine historical texts http://www.documentacatholicaomnia.eu/2 ... tinae.html

When I was studying patristic theology, I usually used the Sources Chrétiennes as a basis for study rather than the editions of Migne. They present the latest in schoarly redaction and present a "convenient" French translation. You might like to consider following those texts for digitalisation.

They have now done the Catenae and had it corrected. Greg Crane just tweeted the following:
Greg Crane wrote:Corrected TEI XML of the 1million word Catena https://github.com/OpenGreekAndLatin/catenae-dev … – needs citations but help us check if the text is 99.95% accurate
