In this forum, we will work with people who are training OCR engines for Polytonic Greek, helping them improve the quality of their engines by correcting specific texts.

Assignment 2: PG 93 col. 1571-2

Post by BruceRobertson »

We've run the 9 volumes of PG that are in colour in the IA. We need training generally, but especially on reasonably dark pages (the very pale ones are not worth training to, since other sources do not share this fault) and italics, both Latin script and Greek. Once again, please do not alter the line breaks, no matter how silly they seem. We have a a way of dealing with these which is not in effect here.

Here's the image for reference

But you'll find it easier to work off of the IA page:

I will do this page - can someone else please sign up for Assignment 3?

Bruce - how many pages of ground truth do we need for this before we're done?

Well, the old joke is that if you create a number of pages of ground truth = to the number of pages in the target corpus, you should get pretty close to perfect results :-) However, if my calculations are correct, the existing classifier is trained on 8 whole pages of ground truth. So any additional pages, especially those that contain lots of characters not well represented in those 8 pages, will help quite a bit.

I'm finding this fairly difficult, largely because when I expand the page to a large size to be certain of the letters, the noise on the page makes it hard for me to see the details I am looking for.

The superscript numerals, for instance, or checking the accent on ὑποτεταγμένα in the phrase ὁ ἔχων ὑποτεταγμένα τὰ σύμπαντα on the first line.

What do I do if I just can't see clearly enough to be sure?

There is a certain degree of informed subjectivity...

I am also finding that it is not all happening from the scan in Assignment 3. Things need to be supplied intelligently according to what they "should" be.

Someone who was conversant with ever permutation of the alphabet wouldn't be able to do this. It requires lexical and grammatical knowledge.

What could ὑποτεταγμένα be, if it wasn't that?

The Latin?

Are you using the image supplied above or the Internet Archive one? You should be able to zoom into IA very far so as to be able to resolve these ambiguities.

Yes, I am doing that, but I wind up seeing stuff like this:
bruce1.png
bruce1.png (5.77 KiB) Viewed 8314 times
I can increase the size, but the resolution isn't great and there is a fair amount of noise, so I wind up with:
bruce2.png
bruce2.png (14.14 KiB) Viewed 8314 times
Here are a few more examples from the page:
bruce3.png
bruce3.png (3.24 KiB) Viewed 8314 times
bruce4.png
bruce4.png (2.64 KiB) Viewed 8314 times
You can open those in a new tab and scale it up, but it's still hard to distinguish figure from noise at this resolution, at least for me.

Screen graphics v. image

Post by Stephen Hughes »

It could be your image viewer is using the screen data for upsizing rather than the image itself. I don't have the problem you are seeing. I get very clear images, but not clear enough to tell a Latin 'c' or 'e' apart.

Hi, all --

Using the Internet Archive link above, you should find a '+' and '-' button on the bottom of the browser window. This will zoom you into an image of a better resolution. I find I can solve just about any problem with this feature.

τυφλὸς ὢν ἄρτι βλέπω.

I was taking the images from the viewer and scaling them up myself. Don't do that ;->
