What exactly does that phrase refer to? Is it hyperbole, or would poor people actually be told to sit at someone's feet? Jonathan, I presented a paper at SBL a few years ago on that part of James. I argued that the language there is best explained if we read the scene as taking place at an early Christian meal. You can see the paper here: http://danielstreett.wordpress.com/2011 ... port-pt-2/
