Finding Audio Files With Greek-English Reading of the Bible

Post by Bernd Strauss »

Hello,
I would like to know where one can download audio files containing an intermittent reading of the Greek text and an English translation. For example, phrases or entire verses read in the Biblical Greek language followed by the reading of an English translation.

Hi Bernd - and welcome to B-Greek!

I do not know of such recordings. Often, the people who record Greek are interested in immersion, and would see English as a distraction from their goal.

If there are no recordings with the original text and a translation read together, what audio recordings can you recommend for learning meanings and pronunciation of ancient Greek words?

This is where you would get somehow enrolled in a learning program. You need to have a base of vocabulary and an understanding of the working of the language at least at a fundamental level before you will achieve any type of comprehension. Krashen pushes for L + 1, not L + 100. Start slow and work up. After all, "one does not fly into flying" (man erfliegt das Fliegen nicht).

If anybody is at a point in their progress with Greek that they are wanting to listen to English, while their eyes are following similar, but perhaps unfamiliar Greek texts such as intertestamental or early Christian writings, here is a resource website that will help with that:

Biblical Audio - Audio Books.

Since it is not specifically designed as an aid to Greek students, the Greek text for those works read are not provided on the sub-sites of the Biblical Audio site.

This method of mixing languages of input can have the benefit of training one to quickly identify the lexically semantically significant words of a passage amongst the grammatical words, which in some cases for some people, forms the basis for memorisation of texts in Greek. That is to say, that it might enhance or develop the phenomenon that I'm presuming we all experience at one time or another of early on recalling some of the key Greek words of a passage as we listen to somebody read a passage or preach on it, and later on being able to recall most of the verse as the grammar of the Greek fills out in our memories.
