How Do You Accent Personal Names in the LXX?

Recently I have doing some reading in the LXX of 2 Kings and 2
Chronicles and noticed that even in accented edtions (both the print
edition of Rahlf's and online at Unbound Bible), the names of people
are not given accent marks.

As I am considering recording some LXX passages (for personal
practice, and possibly as a resource online),I was wondering if there
are some rules for accenting personal names in Koine Greek, or if there are any
online articles about it for free download/printing I could consult.
I know some of the names appear in the NT, so I could look for some of
them there. But there are many LXX personal names that do not appear
in the NT.

Any suggetions will be appreciated.

χαιρε Δεβενιε,

This edition accents all proper names

I'm not sure on what basis they apply these accents, whether they follow the Hebrew or Greek tradition. Most of the accents of proper names fall on the last syllable, but by no means all of them.

Where is Albert P. when you need him? :)

Of course I meant to write Rahlfs' not Rahlf's...

And thanks for the suggestions, Mark. Ευχαριστω ω φιλε μου Μαρκε.

P.S. I did email Albert P. this question. Hopefully I'll hear from him, as well.

Mark, where did you find that Septuagint? It looks great.

I recently found a Greek Bible in a bookstore, which, at first glance, I thought was a Septuagint. As it turned out, it was in Modern Greek. I was surprised at how much of it I was able to understand. Regardless, I'd like to get a nice copy for reading and this one really looks nice.

This subject was broached on the LXX list a few years back (2006). Robert Kraft answered here:

Unless there was an LXX list message on the topic I didn't see, the messages didn't deal with my particular question. While knowing why they were not provided with accent marks is of some interest, the issue is how to pronounce these when reading aloud.

You'll find the proper names accented in the old Lancelot C. Brenton diglot:

A simple guide: accent the final syllable of an Hebrew name with an acute/grave. If it is declinable, that "final" syllable is the one before the case ending. Examples from Isaiah 1 in Swete (which includes accents and breathing marks): Ἀμώς Ἠσαίας Ἰερουσαλήμ Ὀζείου Ἰωαθὰμ Ἀχὰς Ἑζεκίου Ἰσραὴλ Σειὼν σαβαὼθ. Some exceptions: Σόδομα and Γόμορρα.
For a detailed discussion of proper names in the Greek OT, see Thackeray, pages 160-171, available at

χαιρετε James, Ken!

I downloaded the bilingual edition of Brenton and Thackeray's work you referenced. I'm sure I'll be able to understand better now how the accenting is done. I had suspected that the Hebraic names were accented on the last syllable, but was not sure.
