Religious literature

Post by KimmoHuovila »

Are there examples of religious fiction written in Koine or Classical Greek?

By religious fiction I mean literature that is
1) religious in its purpose, that is it has some religious function for a religious group (I don't expect any official status – religiously edifying literature is included) and
2) it was recognized as fiction by the religious group (or the work itself claims to be fiction).

I think you the closest you would come to something which would be considered fiction would be Lucian of Samasota, in various writings. In The True Histories he has a section making fun of life in the underworld. In his several Dialogues he has various humorous interactions of the gods with each other and with mortals. Various other examples can be found scattered through his works.
