Greek texts in Audio fromat?

Post by Peter Streitenberger »

Dear friends, as a sometimes commuter I want to ask if there are Audio versions of classical or koine Greek texts (say Homer) one can listen to while driving or at home? I'd prefer to listen to the Greek original and not a translation. Do you know of anything available?

Those readings are the end result of what might be termed 'true Erasmian'. Because much Erasmian is rather random, classicists have respecified the system as "Restored Attic."
On occasion I've played this for Koine students and the general result is for them to "run, don't walk" to Restored Koine. Even though some students were in stitches, I've also argued that it would be good for students to know this system, in the same way that it is good for English students to know something about CHaucerian English. Of course, it goes without saying that one does not use Chaucer (pre-Great English Vowel shift) for Shakespeare (post Vowel shift), and they can do the math on the Greek. :)
For the SBL panel in 2011 we couldn't find anyone to represent Restored Attic for NT Greek, which is probably just as well.

I agree. I've only heard one Restored Attic speaker I could listen to without a groan.

LibriVox.org has some Greek audio of classical texts, including part of the Odyssey, Plato's Apology and his Dialogues, and portions of Thucydides, among others. All are free to download. Public domain texts are used.

Find them at this link: http://tinyurl.com/p3dtbbu

Some readers use Erasmian, others Modern Greek pronunciation.

They also have some audio portions of the Greek NT.

P.S. I've listened to some of the "Restored Attic" readings, and they sound very stilted to me. Even though I've moved away from Erasmian to Modern Greek as my preferred pronunciation, Erasmian sounds better to me than the "Restored Attic". Although modern Greeks themselves tend to use the Modern pronunciation for classical as well as Koine texts, so I have no problem with readers using Modern accent for classical texts. I'm working through an Attic review grammar with reading selections from Xenophon's Memoribilia and Plato's Apology (Stephen Beall, The Wisdom of Socrates: A Review Grammar and Reader of Attic Greek, free PDF ed. available at http://www.academia.edu) , and reading the Greek texts aloud to myself as I go. Using the Modern accent with them sounds fine to me.

Your kilométrage may vary, of course.
