Scripture Tools for Every Person (STEP)

Post by Stephen Carlson »

This is from the latest SBL e-Newsletter:
Tyndale House and SBLGNT

Tyndale House, with permission from SBL, has added the text of the SBL Greek New Testament to the Scripture Tools for Every Person (STEP) project hosted at http://www.StepBible.com. The SBLGNT is one of many Bible translations and editions used in the project.

The Tyndale STEP program aims to provide reliable Bible software for those in underresourced areas of the world. The software has been developed especially for use by those who have unreliable or limited internet access, so although it is browser based, it can be downloaded and run locally and can be ported across to phone and tablet platforms. The free software is distributed via the Internet, and individuals are allowed to make and give away copies (though not to sell them!).

Thanks to Tyndale House for making this software freely available to students and scholars everywhere, but especially for the availability in ICI countries! A web presentation can be viewed at http://www.tyndale.cam.ac.uk/STEP/STEP1.htm or view further details about the modules and ongoing development at http://www.Tyndale.cam.ac.uk/STEP.

Stephen,

Thanks for posting this. STEP looks like a leap forward in bible software. The bible browser does stuff I never even thought about[1]. For example, when you hover over a word in Genesis 1 Leningrad Codex it highlights every occurrence of that word in the displayed Hebrew text as well as every occurrence of a translation equivalent in the ESV in the parallel display pane. Brilliant idea.

The e-Sword software also supports STEP resources. See http://www.e-sword.net/extras.html I believe e-Sword's STEP support is the same sort of digital representation that Stephen talks about. Am I right or wrong?

The e-Sword STEP stands for "Standard Template for Electronic Publishing" so I think it's something different from the Tyndale House is doing.

Yes, that's an old document format which is quite dead nowadays. The new one is a project, not a format.
