In Gen. 14:13 we have the first use of the word Hebrew.
In the LXX it is περάτῃ which I take to mean "traveller, one who passes by, sojourns" etc.
So my question relates to the Hebrew of which I am just a little rusty.
Does הָעִבְרי come from עֹבֹר
meaning "to pass by"?
Is that why the LXX uses the word περάτῃ instead of Ἑβραῖον as it does a few chapters later in Gen. 39:14?
Cheers,
John Barach, Sr

I'd say you're on the right track.JBarach-Sr wrote:In Gen. 14:13 we have the first use of the word Hebrew.

Remember that the LXX translator did not have vowel points to help him, so he didn't always read the same Hebrew form as we do. He evidently associated the word העברי with the root עבר and translated the meaning of this root, putting it into a noun form. You may notice that the Genesis translator was not consistent with his rendering of Hebrew words derived from עבר. See 15:17; 18:5; 23:16; 32:11; 32:17; 32:32; 33:3; and 39:14, all with different Greek words.

I think you're a bit off-track here. The Hebrew readsIn the LXX it is περάτῃ which I take to mean "traveller, one who passes by, sojourns" etc.
It would appear that περάτῃ is a transliteration of the proper name appearing in Hebrew as פּלִיט with a change of consonant from ר < ל (λ > ρ or l > r). Perhaps this was done in an attempt to make something out of the PN other than a PN considering the syntax of the sentence.וַיָּבֹא הַפָּלִיט וַיַּגֵּד לְאַבְרָם הָעִבְרִי

Actually, John has identified the right word correspondence, as confirmed by the LXX-MT parallel text Rick mentioned (http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/gopher/text/r ... enesis.par):George F Somsel wrote:It would appear that περάτῃ is a transliteration of the proper name appearing in Hebrew as פּלִיט with a change of consonant from ר < ל (λ > ρ or l > r).
