Animal Sounds Vocabulary List?

Post by Devenios Doulenios »

χαίρετε, πᾶσιν οἱ κοινονοί!

Do any of you who teach Greek communicatively, or who are self-learners using that approach, know of any ancient sources for animal sounds/noises vocabulary? I seem to recall that there are a few Biblical passages that mention a lion roaring, dog barking, etc. (although I don't remember where they are), Surely there are also other ancient sources for these and other animal sounds.
Ideas would be appreciated. Especially if anybody has some ready-made lists (preferably with ancient sources credited).

I don't teach Greek, but some thoughts if they're helpful:

The following link has modern Greek onomatopoeia; good to see that _brekekekex_ from Aristophanes _The Frogs_ is still current. Perhaps you could try searching LSJ for the modern terms and finding examples that way?

- http://www.eleceng.adelaide.edu.au/Pers ... nimal.html

Just making a quick check, searching for 'imitate' shows:

- βρεκεκεκέξ to imitate frogs croaking
- γοῖ to imitate pigs grunting

Also...

- τήνελλα to imitate the twang iof a guitar string (!)
- καναχή the ring of clash of metal (Soph.)

I have LSJ ripped into a MySQL database, which makes this simple to perform. There's probably something searchable online that would give you these results and more.

That's such an interesting peace of vocabulary -- animal sounds) I haven't yet considered learning them in Greek, but I got really interested after reading this. I liked the sounds mentioned here, especially the frog's and the pig's) They sound very natural) Gonna search for more :) Thanks!

Maybe not the sound, but the verb for making the sound : βoαω
If you've heard a calf who's separated from his mother, that's exactly what he says.

Further to this vital subject, a blog post at Laudator Temporis Acti...

http://laudatortemporisacti.blogspot.co ... ounds.html

Which offers:
  • βᾶΰζω (to cry bau bau, to bark, cf. Latin baubor)
  • βῆβῆ (the cry of sheep) *
  • γρῦ (the sound a pig makes, cf. Latin grunnio)
* The blog gives βῆ, LSJ gives βῆβῆ.
