First 1000 Words in Koine Greek

Post by Jonathan Robie »

Daniel Street says he really wishes there were a "First 1000 Words" book for Koine Greek.

I like the idea, and this would be reasonably easy to do in HTML on the Web. In fact, it would be a great starting point to doing more interactive software learning tools along the lines of Rosetta Stone, since you need the pictures for that kind of program.

And the good news is that there are a LOT of free pictures on the Internet. So let's have some fun finding pictures and writing simple captions that could be used in Web pages, software, etc. Here's how it works:
  • Use a word frequency list to find commonly used words in the New Testament or Hellenistic literature. The First 1000 Words for Koine Greek are not the same as for modern languages - you don't need to know how to say "school bus", you do need to know how to say θεός and Ιησοῦς. The goal is to start with the most frequent words, and work down through the list.
  • Use Google Image Search or a similar search engine to find an image that is labelled "free for reuse". We're not doing anything commercial here, so free for commercial reuse is not necesssary.
  • Post here with your picture and a caption - or more than one caption, at different levels of complexity. Other people can also step in and offer captions for your picture, or correct your Greek.
  • When you post a picture, please say who took the picture, and what the property rights are, so people can safely use the picture.
You can add value to someone else's post by:
  • Suggesting additional captions
  • Suggesting other images that depict the same thing
  • Correcting errors in their Greek (I haven't written much Greek at all, so I expect to be a victim of this!)
Let the games begin!

Hint: stained glass windows are a good source of pictures about Jesus, God, and the kind of things you read about in the Gospels.

Facebook style photo tagging would be ideal, with quizzes based on images running a close second.

I would want to simply create a set of images and captions that could be used in any software. It would be easy enough to use in Moodle, or in Rosetta-Stone-like software. And I'm likely to start playing with how to present this in the near future, but I'd hope anyone who wants can feel free to use these images and captions.

Is this worth doing?

I tried to add an image and it did not work. I'll probably figure it out, but maybe you can quickly run-down the procedure.

Ooops, I messed up your original message by editing when I meant to reply.

Here's the markup I used for the first message:

Does that help?

"Harvard" Eddie Grant, Cincinnati Reds third baseman, by Paul Thompson, 1911

Portrait of "Harvard Eddie" Edward Leslie Grant, third baseman for the Cincinnati Reds, head-and-shoulders portrait, facing front, with another person's left hand and index finger pointing at Eddie's head. The photo is captioned "Grant, Phila. Nat.", but photographer Paul Thompson may have been unaware that Grant began the 1911 season with the Cincinnati Reds and did not play a single game for the Philadelphia Phillies. A Harvard graduate and lawyer after his retirement from baseball, Grant was one of the few major league baseball players to be killed in World War 1.

Can someone find me good pictures of women with fingers pointing to them? For now, here are some pictures of women to illustrate αὐτή.
