Text-to-Speech for Ancient Greek

Postby Ken M. Penner » January 7th, 2012, 5:01 pm

I just came across this resource:

Partially sighted and blind classicist, and all lovers of Ancient Greek, can not use a computer to have Ancient Greek texte read to them. Jonathan Duddington (Warwick/England) has adapted the software package eSpeak to include an Ancient Greek voice. For details on the software see http://espeak.sourceforge.net .

I just downloaded and installed the app(s). Pretty easy to do. Plugged in something from Matt.8. It played, but was nearly unintelligible. I slowed it down as much as I could. It was still very difficult to understand and has no emotion. Best to stick with real audio for now. Text to voice apps are still in the early stages (as far as polished output) methinks. My worst college class was a Semantics class where the prof was interested in how to represent speech so machines like this could play it (like I knew anything about statistical mathematics, calculus, etc. and such - way over my head). We've come a long way in 30 years, but we are not there yet.
