αἴσθημα

Post by Scott Lawson »

αἴσθ-ημα , ατος, τό,
A. object of sensation, Arist. APo.99b37, Metaph.1010b32, Plot.4.3.25 and 29; “τὸ νοεῖν γέγονεν αἰσθήμασι μόνοις” Phld.D.1.13, etc.
II. sense or perception of a thing, “κακῶν” E.IA1243.

Does αἴσθημα correspond to the word "sentiment" (as in "a kind sentiment") or would διάνοια fit better?

Are you trying to translate the word "sentiment" into Greek?

Yes I am. I am also trying to build up my vocabulary of ancient Greek. I note that αἴσθημα can be used that way in modern Greek and find the definition in LSJ puzzling. Perhaps you could offer clarification.

OK. It may be the case that English "sentiment" and Greek αἴσθημα have gone through similar sense developments and metaphorical extensions. I'd have to research this noun.

I would recommend the Louw-Nida lexicon for your effort. It groups words by their similar semantics, so you can get a good sense of how various similar words cover a particular semantic space.

I've put Louw-Nida at the top of my wish-list.

I note that the suffix "μα" is an indicator of - object / often a result of action [drama, enigma]..."something + past participle" thus, "enigma" would be something obscurely spoken. I suppose that is what LSJ means by "object of sensation." So, something felt/sensed might well be "sentiment."

αἰσθημα / ἐπαισθημα occur 117 times [TLGe], so the word gets used. Here's a search of LSJ retrieving some words to match up against. T

1. ἐμπαθής (page 542).
τὰ θεῖα Id.2.1125d; ἐ. φιλία passionate affection, Alciphr.2.4.12; τὸ ἐ. sentiment, emotion, Plu.2.25d. Adv. -θῶς with deep emotion, [ τὴν δεξιὰν] πιέσας

2. μεγαλογνωμοσύνη (page 1086).
μεγαλογνωμοσύνη , ἡ, loftiness of sentiment, X.Ages.8.3.

3. παρένθυρσος (page 1336).
παρένθυρσος , ὁ, false sentiment or affectation of style, Theod. ap.Longin.3.

4. ἐπαίσθ-ημα, ατος, τό,
perception, Epicur.Fr.36, Placit.4.8.2, Phld. Mus.p.66K.

There are also words like νόημα, φρόνημα, πνευμα, γνῶμα, If you want to search for this type of word, go to http://perseus.uchicago.edu/Reference/LSJ.html and in the Greek field type in μα$, and you will get a return of all words ending in -μα.

A search for sentiment in Luow-Nida came back with nothing. Here is how LN organizes
