GreekLexicon.org -- a free, online Greek lexical resource

Post by ulrikp »

B-Greekers,

After a long hiatus of about four-five years, I am back on B-Greek. In the meantime, I've gotten married, had three kids, and earned my PhD :-).

I'd like to announce a free online resource:

http://greeklexicon.org/

For now, it contains two dictionaries of Greek, one being Strong's and one being John Jeffrey Dodson's 2010 re-hash of four public-domain lexicons that he did for his Reader's edition of the Byzantine Majority text.

It also contains a "download" section with (for now) two public domain lexicons in PDF.

I hope to expand on this resource later. Should you have any ideas for improvement, please contact me via email or here on B-Greek. My email address can be had from this webpage:

http://ulrikp.org/contact.html

And yes, I do know that Strong's dictionary is not a good resource, and contains errors.

Regards,

Excuses, excuses ;->

Seriously, congratulations on all of the above, and welcome back!

Cool!

I've browsed Dodson some, and it looks good at first blush, has anyone out there spent enough time with it to comment on how good it is overall? For those of us who could use a source of simple glosses in software projects, this seems like it's at about the right level.

Congratulations Ulrik!

What is Dodson's lexicon like?
Also, you say "for now" with regards to pdf downloads of the lexicon, I'm wondering whether that data is available in any other format at present or whether and when you are considering making it available in, for example, a csv.

You can easily download Dodson's lexicon in PDF from the links on Ulrik's site.

It looks like this:

Code: Select all

428 ἀνεύθετος, ον Adj unsuitable, inconvenient
429 ἀνευρίσκω v. I find by seeking out
430 ἀνέχομαι v. I endure, bear with
431 ἀνεψιός, οῦ, ὁ n.m. a cousin
432 ἄνηθον, ου, τό n.n. anise, dill
433 ἀνήκω v. is due, becoming, suitable, proper
434 ἀνήμερος, ον Adj not tame, fierce
435 ἀνήρ, ἀνδρός, ὁ n.m. a male human being, a man
436 ἀνθίστημι v. I take a stand against, oppose, resist
437 ἀνθομολογέομαι v. I confess, give thanks to
438 ἄνθος, ους, τό n.n. bloom, flower
439 ἀνθρακιά, ᾶς, ἡ n.f. a heap of burning coals
440 ἄνθραξ, ακος, ὁ n.m. a coal
441 ἀνθρωπάρεσκος, ον Adj desirous of pleasing men
442 ἀνθρώπινος, η, ον Adj belonging to human beings,
human
443 ἀνθρωποκτόνος, ου, ὁ Adj a murderer
444 ἄνθρωπος, ου, ὁ n.m. a man, one of the human race
pdftotext does a pretty good job of extracting the text.

Sorry to be late to reply.

@James Cuénod :
The data is available in CSV format for the asking. Please contact me using the method indicated in my Original Post if you are interested.

@MAubrey :
I can't remember what it was you were supposed to send me an email about, but if you do remember, you know where to find me :-).

Best,
