Vocabulary by Author Group

How can I best learn new vocabulary items? What aids are there and what pitfalls should be avoided? How does a beginner learn to use a lexicon?

Vocabulary by Author Group

Post by Gary Collier »

I'm looking for a vocabulary guide to the NT that lists vocab by author-group. eg. The complete vocab of the John's corpus or the Paul corpus (hopefully, divided by authentic and questioned books; and also by frequecy)

I'm aware of the Lexical readers by Kubo and also Burer/Miller. And of course the standard guides by Tom Robinson, and Scott/Dean/Sparks/LaZar, Van Voorst, and then Trenchard. None of these is what I want (for my purpose). I want ALL of Paul's or John's (etc) vocab in one place by frequency.

Is there such a book? (Maybe I'm missing the obvious.)

Will Logos Software or Bible Works produce such a list? How could I go about generating such lists?

Thanks,
Gary D. Collier

I have used MorphGNT data and simple unix tools (on linux). But now I can't find the MorphGNT text... "There isn't a GitHub Page hosted here, sorry." See http://jtauber.com/morphgnt/. Can someone help? James? If we find it, I can give further advice.

Edit: last time I did things with MorphGNT I used python language. A frequency list for the whole NT is easy with simpler tools, but more advanced actions are better to do with something more complicated, like a general purpose programming language.

MorphGNT has been reissued on basis of SBLGNT; it is accessible (in ZIP or TAR.TG format at:

Thanks!

Quick help for LibreOffice Calc (probably works in OpenOffice, maybe with Exel):

"Insert" sheet from file, open a file, set space as separator, OK. Repeat with other books. Now the NT books are in the spreadsheet one word per row, one data item per column. The last column is the lemma. You can sort by that column. In the next column, in the first row put a function: the lemma is in column G, so the function is COUNTIF($G$1:$G$n,$G1) where n is the last row (the row of the last word). Copy the cell downwards until the last row. Sort by the column H. Unfortunately you don't have unique words; they are repeated as many times as they occur. Maybe someone can help further... A python script is of course cooler :)

Never mind... You can create a filter: select the lemma column, create Standard filter, field name comes from the first row, change Value to Not empty, open More options, add No duplication. OK.

These may work directly only with certain versions of the spreadsheet applications. YMMV, but HTH :)

I assume John's corpus would be the epistles and the Gospels? How would you divide the books of Paul?

Are these two authors sufficient?

In Logos 4 I can create a word list (under "File"), choose NA27 (or any version available), and then add specific references. I called my list "Pauline" and so far have added Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, and Galatians with no glitches (other than the time it takes to generate the list). However, it is not a concordance, so it doesn't give specific occurrences or forms of the word in specific locations. It does give a word count for each word.

You asked about doing this with Logos. It can be done, but would require creating some collections of authors (Paul is already an option). You would then use the collections to create your vocabulary list.

By "frequency" do you mean frequency in the New Testament, or frequency in that corpus?
Either way, Flash! Pro might be able to help.

It comes with vocabulary selectable by passage, which is also tagged for frequency in the NT, and can import a custom "closed text" (e.g., Paul's letters) to generate a frequency list from that corpus.

Ken,

I just sent the following letter to Logos...
Now I'm wondering if I should have sent it to you.
How "do-able" is this:
  • Logos,

ESL teachers have long seen the value of a core list of vocabulary. One nice tool on the web compares core vocabulary with any text. The tool generates a file in which words which are not on the core list are highlighted in Red. See http://www.lextutor.ca/vp/eng/.

Wilfred Major has come up with a 50% and 80% core list of vocabulary for Greek. In any Greek text, 50% of the words used will made up of words that are on the 50% list, a list of only 65 separate words. Likewise, in any text, 80% of the words used will made up of words that are on the 50% list, a list of only 1000 separate words.

    See:

Major, Wilfred E. (2008). It’s Not the Size, It’s the Frequency: The Value of Using a Core Vocabulary in Beginning and Intermediate Greek. CPL Online, 4.1, 1-24.

    http://www.camws.org/cpl/cplonline/Majorcplonline.pdf

Other versions of the list are found at:

    http://www.dramata.com/

Now, wouldn't it be absolutely fabulous if Logos had a little tool that combined what Lextutor does with Major's list?
With a click of a button, you could view a Greek text on Logos and be able to see which words are on the 50 or 80% list. What a boon to learning vocabulary! What would be even better, is a 50 and 80% list that took into account frequently used NT words. This would be a vocabulary tool specifically for Biblical Greek teachers. I am working on such a list right now. I've been taking Voorst's work and comparing it to Major's work to create my own list. But Logos could do such a better job at this than I.

Logos has created vocabulary tools in the past (I still miss the old Libronix tool!). But this type of vocabulary tool would surpass anything previously developed. And, if I'm not mistaken, this would be a very easy tool for Logos to create. Having an editable "core list" would be a great feature. Teachers will have different opinions and needs when it comes to a core list vocabulary. For example, I need to include a number of words on my core list that are very useful for teaching Greek communicatively (TPR, TPRS), but are not on the 80% list (e.g. "move!, jump!, dance!").
