On the other hand ...

... if you consider the assertion of Isaiah that sin makes separation
between God and humans (59:2) together with Jesus' last words on the cross
... death's definition could be "separation from God", and then Adam and Eve
would have died the very moment they desobeyed God.

Understood this way the sentence from Genesis would mean literally that the
moment they touched the fruit they died (were separated from God).

Just my 2 "theological" cents.
