just to add my two cents in...

When I read this topic, I thought about Pliny's letter which, while
discussing his own questions about Christians, says:

"I judged it so much the more necessary to extract the real truth, with the
assistance of torture, from two female slaves, who were styled deaconesses
(lat. ministrae): but I could discover nothing more than depraved and
excessive superstition."
-Pliny, Letters, Book X, XCVI [LCL] (Melmoth)

If this adds anything to the conversation let me know...
