i think it modifies "faith". It is their faith that allows them to enter
into fellowship.

from the phrase energhs genhtai en epignwsei pantos- the literal translation
of which is odd in english but fine in greek. they evidently take genhtai
as a passive and translate rather idiomatically rather than woodenly. i
think its a fine rendition.

take a look at o'brien's commentary on philemon in the word biblical
commentary series. its thorough and genuinely excellent. he agrees with
you and says "the exact meaning of v. 6 is difficult to determine...".
