In regard to _why_ OUC cannot negate MENWN instead of hAMARTANEI in 1 John
3.6a, I would suggest that the following section from Smyth be given as a
reason:

<<§2734. The participle with the article has ou when a definite person or
thing is meant, but mę when the idea is indefinite and virtually
conditional (whoever, whatever); and when a person or thing is to be
characterized (of such a sort, one who; 2705 g). Cp. 2052.>>

Basically, hO EN AUTWi MENWN would be a conditional... "whoever remains in
him," like OSTIS EN AUTWi MENHi (whoever might remain in him) if converted
from a participial substantive. Therefore, it requires MH as a negative
particle if negated. This is better explained in the rest of the quote I
put in my last post (taken from Smyth).

Regards,
Jason
