One does not need to consider the "children" as being literally the flesh and
blood decendents of the parent. The term "father" and "child" were used of
the relationship between a teacher and his disciples. This may be the case
here. Frederick Weidmann ( _Polycarp and John_, Notre Dame, IN: University
of Notre Dame Press, 1999), pp 84-92, makes precisely this point noting 1
Tim. 1.2 and Tit. 1.4 in this regard. The requirement then becomes: What
about his pupils?
