Dear B.J., IMHO the confusion arises because the NEFOS MARTURWN are considered by some as a "*crowd of Spectators*", watching from some sort of heavenly viewing platform on a fleecy white NEFOS. Whereas they are surely "Witnesses" whose testimony has already been given; the victors of previous gladiatorial combats in the Arena of life. They are the previous medal winners whose names are inscribed in the Hall of Fame. They are "Examples" not "Spectators". Can a MARTUS be a passive spectator? or even a cheering onlooker at the Games? A "Cloud" of Witnesses NEFOS MARTURWN ia an unexpected Collective Noun for a group of witnesses. Is there any secular literary evidence for it? NEFOS is such a nebulous word (pun intended).
