Matthew, I went home last night and read through Machen's explanations of accenting to find exactly what you were referring to. I think you should carefully reread what he says. He did NOT say that the ultima of the nominative singular form ANTHRWPOS was long. In fact, he is using it as an illustration of an accent being on the antepenult of a noun in the nominative singular and in all other forms of that same noun the accent attempting to move back to the antepenult, but that in some of those forms it cannot do so because the ultima is long. I admit that Machen's explanation is rather confusing but he did not intend to say that the ultima of ANTHRWPOS is long.
