Susanne joins Angelo in the area.

                        SUSANNE
                Why, hello.

                        ANGELO
                Hello there.

                        SUSANNE
                I've been looking for you.

                        ANGELO
You break my heart, kidding me like that.

                        SUSANNE
                It's the truth.

                        ANGELO
I must be having a dream.

                        SUSANNE
                I'll tell you something, Angelo--

                        ANGELO
                She calls me Angelo!

                        SUSANNE
You have a way of staying on a lady's mind. I
admit, I wasn't too interested in you at
first, call in first impressions, but I've
been thinking about you and have decided
you're a man of mystery. To a woman of
curiosity such as myself -- well, that's not
                the worst state of affairs.

                        ANGELO
Pardon me, but I don't get it.

                        SUSANNE
You're attracted to me. You made that clear
enough. Perhaps I'm attracted to you, after
                all.

                        ANGELO
American women can be so aggressive!

                        SUSANNE
When I want something -- or someone -- I go
                after him.

                        ANGELO
It's not the way we do it in the old country.

                        SUSANNE
But we're in the New World, aren't we?

                                ANGELO
This sternwheeler, it's a world of its own,
                that's a fact.

                        SUSANNE
What are we going to do about it, Angelo?

                        ANGELO
                About the sternwheeler?

                        SUSANNE
Don't be coy. About us. About our mutual
                attraction.

                        ANGELO
But you're with another man, this is the
                impression I get.

                        SUSANNE
Is that still bothering you? Justin and I
grew up together. He's the brother I never
                had.

                        ANGELO
                This is true?

                        SUSANNE
Would I tell you if it wasn't?

                        ANGELO
                You are a fascinating woman.

                        SUSANNE
I try to be. I have a lovely home in the
hills overlooking the city. Perhaps you'd
care for a drink after we dock.

                        ANGELO
You don't mess around, do you?

                        SUSANNE
                No, I don't.

                        ANGELO
As long as I live here, I won't get used to
                the ways of American women.

                        SUSANNE
How long has your family been here?

                        ANGELO
I was ten when we came from the old country.

                        SUSANNE
You said your brother joined the cult.

                        ANGELO
                Did I say that?

                                SUSANNE
You wanted me to introduce you to the bride,
so maybe you could track down your brother.
I got the impression you're not too happy
                about him doing that.

                        ANGELO
One minute I don't get the time of day,
suddenly you want my family story.

                        SUSANNE
Like I said, I've become very interested in
                you.

                        ANGELO
Why do I find that so hard to believe?

                        SUSANNE
Because I'm aggressive? Or not aggressive
                enough?

                        ANGELO
There is more aggressive than what I've seen?

                        SUSANNE
                Of course.

Suddenly she steps forward and gives him a long kiss.

                        SUSANNE
What do they call that in the old country?

And just as suddenly, Angelo now grabs her arm.

                        ANGELO
                That something stinks.

                        SUSANNE
                Angelo--!

                        ANGELO
Who have you been talking to?

                        SUSANNE
                You're hurting me--!

                        ANGELO
You ask too many questions -- who are you
                asking them for?

                                SUSANNE
                Let go--!

He does but now menacingly corners her.

                        SUSANNE
Angelo, I don't know what you think you're
                doing--

                        ANGELO
You ask about the old country. I show you the
old country. We know about what you call
putting on the act. You've been putting on
the act. Now you tell me why, and who is
asking you to do this, and maybe we can be
                friends after all.

                        SUSANNE
                I told you, I don't know what you're talking
                about.

                        ANGELO
In the old country, a lie is a very large
crime. Not like in America, the little white
lie that is forgiven, it's like with the
thief, we cut off his hand.

                        SUSANNE
What are you trying to say?

                        ANGELO
                Use your imagination.

                        SUSANNE
                God, I've misjudged character before -- I
thought the old country was associated with
                romance and--

                        ANGELO
                Cut the crap. Who?

                        SUSANNE
                No one.

        He grabs her again.

                        SUSANNE
                I'll scream--!

        He lets her go.

                        ANGELO
You go to this person, whoever it is, and you
tell them I want to talk to them. Not sooner
or later but right now. You go do that, and
I'll be waiting right down here, you
                understand me?

                        SUSANNE
How many times do I have to tell you--?

                        ANGELO
You tell me too much crap already, you
understand me? Now get out of here. I'll
wait five minutes, no more, you don't get this
person down here to talk to me, I have to
presume you are alone in this, which is not
very healthy, at least if you are put up to
it, you are not the instigator. Now go!

        Susanne hurries off, going upstairs.
