B/ 5200 Evelyn enters
EVELYN
Excuse me, I . . . I was going to use the
phone . . .
She goes to the phone on the wall and will start to dial,
then hang up, not wanting to phone with people around.
EVELYN
Well, I guess I can phone later.
CYNDI
Did you want to be alone?
EVELYN
Oh, no, it's all right, I can call later, it's
really nothing. No, that's not true. I've
just been through a terrible ordeal.
CYNDI
You are upset. Make your call, we'll move
elsewhere.
EVELYN
No, please. You might as well know. Well,
maybe you already do. I just lost my nerve
for a moment -- not used to the big scoop, you
know! God, I can't believe this-- . . .
She takes a deep breath, regaining her composure.
EVELYN
I know about the drug deal happening here
tonight. And I aim to get to the bottom of
it.
She thinks she's telling CYNDI something the latter already
knows but is met by blank stares.
EVELYN
You do know what I'm talking about, don't
you?
CYNDI
No, I don't.
TRUDY
Is this one of Jack's stunts? I can't believe
he'd do this at my wedding.
EVELYN
Maybe, but I don't think so. I think it
involves someone in the church. Yang Wolf,
for example.
TRUDY
Yang Wolf is selling drugs?
EVELYN
Perhaps.
CYNDI
What makes you so sure something like that is
going on?
EVELYN
I overheard the deal being made. Angelo
DiMarco, one of the guests, is in on it as
well. Very much in on it -- he threatened my
life when I questioned him about it.
CYNDI
Then that wasn't very smart of you.
TRUDY
Is anyone else involved?
EVELYN
Maxine, I think. Or at least her name was
brought up.
TRUDY
I wouldn't put it past her to be the
ringleader.
CYNDI
I don't like talk like this. The church does
not deal in drugs.
EVELYN
I don't mean to involve the church itself --
but some of your members may be involved,
without your knowledge.
CYNDI
Drugs contradict church philosophy.
EVELYN
Perhaps not all of your members believe church
philosophy.
CYNDI
Then why on earth would they join?
She is baiting Trudy now.
CYNDI
What would be the point?
EVELYN
I just know what I heard.
CYNDI
Yin Trudy, explain to her the seriousness of
our spiritual purpose. It would be absurd to
join the church, to submit yourself to the
spiritual discipline of the church, to embrace
the difficult task of seeking primitive
balance in a culture that has forgotten what
balance means -- to join and not believe, not
participate? Tell her.
Trudy is uncomfortable in this role.
TRUDY
Well, it does involve discipline. It really
doesn't make much sense just to join for the
fun of it.
EVELYN
Not the fun of it -- to run a very profitable
drug ring.
TRUDY
You really think someone is doing that?
CYNDI goes to greater extremes to trap Trudy now -- she
begins her channelling meditation, humming.
CYNDI
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm etc.
EVELYN
She's channelling, isn't she?
TRUDY
Yes.
EVELYN
Why, do you suppose?
TRUDY (worried)
I don't know.
CYNDI
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm etc.
