                        JUSTIN
                Your hypothesis is interesting.
It occurred to me as well.

                        LYLLA (ignoring this)
I haven't seen your client. Is she here?

                        JUSTIN (also oblique)
                She's delighted for her daughter,
                of course.

                        LYLLA
But if she's marrying a con man?

                        JUSTIN
I often worry about things that don't
bother my client -- as you do.

                        LYLLA
One thing confuses me. Granted you
                are family -- the brother
of the deceased -- but isn't this case
                small potatoes for you?

                        JUSTIN
Mrs. Brodey is accused of murdering her
                husband. Hardly an inconsequential
                affair.

                        LYLLA
                But you've gained national notoriety
                for defending the Mafia, upholding
                the rights of--

                        JUSTIN
I'm a criminal lawyer, Miss Morrison.

                        LYLLA
I take it you're representing Mrs.
                Brodey as a family favor?

                        JUSTIN
                She's innocent, if that's what you're
                getting at.

                        LYLLA
Will you be representing her interests
                in the estate as well?

                        JUSTIN
It's your client who contests the will,
not Mrs. Brodey. Besides, as executor,
                it wouldn't be appropriate.

                        LYLLA
We contest the mental stature of Trudy
in giving everything to the Church, as
well as Dr. Brodey's state of mind when
                he videotaped the will.

                        JUSTIN
Freedom of religion has a long and
noble history. And my brother, of
                course, was a famous eccentric.

                        LYLLA
Conning also has a long history.

                        JUSTIN
                You sound like we're enemies.

                        LYLLA
But if you agree the groom may have
ulterior motives, we might be allies.
                Tell me, Mr. Brodey--

                        JUSTIN
                Justin.

                        LYLLA
                Justin. Which are we?

                        JUSTIN
                It's a strange church, I'll grant you
that. But Trudy's motives only interest
me insofar as she once had a relationship
with the housekeeper, Maxine, who testified
against my client. Maxine may belong to
                the church herself.

                        LYLLA
Really? I thought she disappeared shortly
                after testifying against Mrs. Brodey.

                        JUSTIN
She may have joined the Church. In which
case, she might retain a relationship with
                Trudy.

                        LYLLA
Trudy might be implicated in the testimony
                against her own mother?

                        JUSTIN
Unlikely, but we must test all theories,
                mustn't we?
