JUSTIN and SUSANNE are alone.
JUSTIN
I can't find Helen. Have you seen her?
SUSANNE
No.
JUSTIN
I'm worried about her.
SUSANNE
She may be planning to make a surprise grand
entrance.
JUSTIN
I thought I was giving her a ride. She wasn't
home.
SUSANNE
Really?
JUSTIN
You think she plans to make a grand entrance?
SUSANNE
I'm sure that must be it. You
know Helen, she's not going to
let this be just another dull
wedding. She probably made other
arrangements to get her and forgot
to tell you.
JUSTIN
It's hardly dull, given all the weirdos
around here.
SUSANNE
But Helen won't let weirdos upstage
her.
JUSTIN
I hope you're right.
SUSANNE
I'm sure I am. How can there be
a wedding without Helen? It's
unthinkable. So relax and tell
me what you've been up to.
JUSTIN
Defending Helen, lately. I think her
rivals are hoping she's guilty. They
probably believe she did murder the
doctor.
SUSANNE
Poisoned him, is what I heard. But let's
talk about something more interesting.
I heard you got divorced.
JUSTIN
Two years ago.
SUSANNE
Well, you haven't been home since then,
have you? I bet there's a new woman
in your life.
JUSTIN
Not really.
SUSANNE
Now that surprises me.
JUSTIN
And you? I heard you got divorced yourself.
SUSANNE
You are behind the times: I've
married and divorced again since
then. Me and Liz, we just don't seem
to be compatible with matrimony.
JUSTIN
I think I'll try a live-in next time
myself.
SUSANNE
I think even that may be too much
for me. You know what it is? I
really don't mind being alone. Men
don't like that in a woman. Self-reliance
threatens them.
JUSTIN
Then you've been with clingers. That
was my problem, not having enough time
to myself.
SUSANNE
Franklin, the last one, wouldn't even
let me do the Sunday crossword in peace.
I'd take it to the terrace, he'd follow
me, reading the sports pages to me of
all things. Follow me around the house
like a puppy dog, throwing meaningless
statistics at me, so-and-so walked in
a run, the count was such-and-such with
two outs in the ninth when pow!, someone
or other belted it over the fence. No
matter what I said, he refused to believe
I was not interested in football.
JUSTIN
Baseball.
SUSANNE
Of course.
JUSTIN
I can sympathize with you. My ex kept me up
to date with the strategies and whatall in her
bridge club. I've refused to learn for years.
SUSANNE
I know just how you feel.
A pause: and Susanne laughs.
JUSTIN
What's so funny?
SUSANNE
The two of us. Who would've thought we'd have
so much in common?
JUSTIN
Do we?
SUSANNE
We need our privacy -- that's a significant
common denominator in today's world.
JUSTIN
Susanne, are you making a move on
me?
SUSANNE
Well, it has crossed my mind. What
do you think?
JUSTIN
I didn't know you were so aggressive.
SUSANNE
I'm not proposing, for God's sake. But
since you're in town for a while . . .
JUSTIN
Only until we win the appeal. Then it's
back to San Francisco.
SUSANNE
I hope you're not possessive.
JUSTIN
Hardly.
SUSANNE
Then perhaps we can enjoy one another
while we can.
JUSTIN
I'm flattered.
SUSANNE
Don't be. Just take advantage of the
situation.
JUSTIN
Yes, perhaps I shall.
SUSANNE
Good. Now that that's settled, tell
me what you really think of this
wedding.
JUSTIN
I find it very suspicious.
SUSANNE
In other words, Trudy's lost her
marbles.
JUSTIN
It's a possibility. I didn't think she'd
remarry so soon after divorcing Raymond.
SUSANNE
Perhaps she's doing it to hurt
Helen.
JUSTIN
How do you mean?
SUSANNE
I assume she believes Helen is guilty,
considering how close she was to her
father. She knows Helen is tough-minded
enough to see through this cult, any
cult, so naturally the way to get at
her would be to give the estate money
to one. Helen, bless her soul, is
trying to go along with it, but what
alternative does she have? It would
be more of a scandal to turn her own
daughter away, not to go along with
the wedding at all. That's why I
feel certain she'll be here. But
inside, I know she's in pain. Trudy
in a cult is just tearing her up
inside -- and then giving most of the estate
to the cult as well--
JUSTIN
We don't really know she's doing that.
SUSANNE
Of course she is.
JUSTIN
Jack is challenging the will, at any rate.
SUSANNE
He is?
JUSTIN
This is just between you, me and the
fencepost -- but that's what Lylla
Morrison is doing here. Jack's retained
her to challenge the will and also Trudy's
sanity, her ability to handle her
own affairs.
SUSANNE
That's the last thing Helen needs, her
children fighting over the estate.
JUSTIN
I think she's on Jack's side.
SUSANNE
It still must be tearing her up inside.
JUSTIN
After what she's been through already,
this is small potatoes.
SUSANNE
That poor woman. She's a wonder, how she
bears up, then sending out those lovely
wedding invitations.
