WAITPERSON joins JACK in the area.
JACK
Got to talk to you, man. We got
to be real careful.
WAITPERSON
What're you talking about?
JACK
You know who's here? Angelo DiMarco.
That name mean anything to you?
WAITPERSON
Not really.
JACK
Mr. Kingpin, Mr. Mainman who'd just
love to find out he's got some
competition in an area he considers
his own private kingdom. Can you
dig it? He thinks he's gonna scare
me into kissing his ass but no way
that's happening, man. But we got
to keep cool, I don't want to make
it easy for him.
WAITPERSON
What's he doing here?
JACK
Trying to catch me in the act, I
assume. We'll have our showdown,
but by my rules, not his.
WAITPERSON
Listen, maybe this is something you
should handle alone.
JACK
Don't panic: We just got to be careful.
WAITPERSON
I was planning to talk to you anyway --
I'm done, man.
JACK
What's that supposed to mean?
WAITPERSON
I want to give you the stash right now.
I don't want anything more to do with it.
JACK
You can't do that.
WAITPERSON
I'm doing it.
JACK
What's the big deal? DiMarco's nothing,
man, we just got to be a little careful.
I'll pick it up tomorrow, same plan as
ever.
WAITPERSON
I want to give it to you now.
JACK
DiMarco knows me, man, and he's already on to
something, you know, like the only reason he's
here is to see what I'm up to. Last thing I
want is dope on me.
WAITPERSON
You're sure he's not here for the wedding?
JACK
He could care less about the wedding.
He doesn't even know Trudy.
WAITPERSON
How's he know you?
JACK
I used to do business with this guy,
Polo, who worked for him. He thinks I
burned Polo and got into business for myself.
He's here to see for himself. I have to stay
clean.
WAITPERSON
I can't leave it in the building, I can't
take the chance. And I've already done
more than I wanted to.
JACK
Just take it home with you, we'll
connect tomorrow afternoon sometime.
WAITPERSON
Why do I have to take all the risks?
I've already done more than my share.
You think it was easy in Astoria,
tourists all over hell, trying to figure
out who the dude with the stash was, and
then figuring out where to hide it
once he made the transfer? It was a
million deaths, it's been like that every
time, I get so goddamn nervous. It isn't worth
it. This is the last time, man. I go to the
coast for the pickup, I hide it here and take
all the risks. You do shit.
JACK
Fine. Take it home with you tonight, it's the last
time.
WAITPERSON
You take it home.
JACK
Brad/Brenda, I explained to you--
WAITPERSON
I'm not taking all the risk any more.
JACK
Angelo doesn't know you, there's no risk.
WAITPERSON
My boss does, and he's already suspicious.
JACK
How can he suspect anything?
WAITPERSON
He does, is all. I just have this
feeling. I wait til the wedding's over, I'll go
nuts, I'm already going nuts. I got to give
it to you right now. It's your gig, not mine.
JACK
Can you get it and put it somewhere
else? Someplace near the exit, where I can
grab it on the way out?
WAITPERSON
Where? You see any way to get privacy
around here? I'm already nervous about where I put
it.
JACK
So where does that leave us?
WAITPERSON
We can dump it in a trash bin and forget it.
JACK
Are you crazy?
WAITPERSON
Hey, if neither of us--
JACK
You can take it home, goddamn it. No one
suspects you.
WAITPERSON
What am I going to do, get it now and
carry it around all evening? I swear, think my
boss suspects, I think he's nosing around,
snooping, trying to find it.
JACK
Man, that's paranoia.
WAITPERSON
That's easy for you to say.
JACK
Brad/Brenda, I let you in on a good
thing--
WAITPERSON
Maybe not as good as I thought.
JACK
You got problems at home, you told me, you got
sick parents and lots of doctor bills, so I
give you a chance to make some easy money, I--
WAITPERSON
Hey, who's doing who a favor? You
said you were being watched, you
needed someone else to deal with
the pickup from the coast. Help me out, old
college classmate, old friend.
JACK
You're getting paid well.
WAITPERSON
But the risk isn't worth it any
longer.
JACK
You can't let me down like this,
man.
WAITPERSON
I'm sorry, Jack. I got to watch out
for number one. Just like you.
JACK
There's got to be a way.
WAITPERSON
I can't think of one.
JACK
If it's too dangerous where it is,
where your boss may find it, how about
moving it? Put it where you can get it later.
WAITPERSON
Why don't I give it to you right
now and you do that?
JACK
Because goddamn Angelo is on my
case! I know he suspects something.
WAITPERSON
So we're back where we started.
JACK
How about planting it on someone
that leaves the building. Something
you can get to later. With the dirty
dishes, or food, or something. Get it
out of the building but keep it on the
grounds.
WAITPERSON
Like what?
JACK
I don't know. Aren't there supplies
or something that go out of the building
when the wedding's over?
WAITPERSON
Sure.
JACK
Something you can get to later.
WAITPERSON
Why's it always me, me, me? I
don't see you taking much risk,
old buddy.
JACK
Jesus, if you knew how close my
ass was to grass . . .
WAITPERSON
Doesn't move me.
JACK
Look, goddamn it, I gave you the
chance of a lifetime!
WAITPERSON
You didn't say it'd be dangerous!
JACK
It's not, if you cooperate!
WAITPERSON
Not for you, maybe!
They stop, at a standoff.
JACK
Okay, okay. Can you put it
with something that goes off the
premises, where I can get to it later?
WAITPERSON
Everything going off the floor gets
locked up in one storeroom or other.
JACK
How about giving me a key, asshole?
WAITPERSON
I don't have all the keys, man.
JACK
Somewhere where you have a goddamn
key! Do I have to do all the
thinking around here?
WAITPERSON
It's your game. You understand me?
As far as I'm concerned, my role here
is finito, the end, over and out,
good buddy. Because this isn't
exactly what--
Jack is suddenly aware that Angelo is headed their way.
JACK
Shut up! That's him coming.
They stop, nervously, as Angelo enters the area.
