Wolf hurries Maxine into the area.
YANG WOLF
Angelo found out about his brother, Nick.
YIN MAXINE
Then you're in real trouble, aren't you?
YANG WOLF
I don't need no lip from you. You're going to
help me get out of this.
YIN MAXINE
Don't get rough with--
He grabs her.
YANG WOLF
Now you listen to me. You stumbled into this,
and you've been getting away with murder,
living on borrowed time, ever since because
nobody's going to believe anything you have to
say, you're too far gone, if you know what I
mean, one look at you and people wonder what
drugs you're on, right?
YIN MAXINE
You don't frighten me.
YANG WOLF
That's part of your problem. Because if you
had an ounce of sense, lady, you'd know you're
going to be in deep trouble, may already be in
deep trouble if I decide I can't trust you.
YIN MAXINE
You can't hurt me, I know too much.
YANG WOLF
Wrong -- that's precisely why I can hurt you,
why I may have no other choice than to hurt
you -- because, yes, you know too much.
His manner becomes more threatening now, until Maxine gets
genuinely frightened.
YANG WOLF
But you're a dingaling, and that's going to
work in my favor. You're one weirdo -- even
in this weird church people think you're
weird. All this surrogate mother crap, what a
joke. Your breeding days ended years ago,
lady. All this high-faulutin stuff about your
art, all this holier-than-thou stuff -- you
know what people say about you behind your
back? Even these weirdo church members, know
what they say about you? That you're over the
edge, something burned out your brain years
ago. Some are a little kinder than that, they
think you need help, you came to the church
because you can't make it anywhere else -- I
mean, in the real world out there, someone
with your mental problems, a real mental case,
they might even try suicide, right? Like out
here in the boonies, someone as weird and
unstable as you, they might even jump out the
window, off the roof. No one would be surprised
by that.
Plop!, there she goes!, poor Maxine, trying
to have a baby like some kid, thinking she's
some kind of undiscovered genius or something,
thinks she better than anyone else when anyone
can see she's blind as a bat, living on pure
fantasies, living inside her own head and
noplace else, who's going to be surprised if
such a screwed-up lady jumps off the roof,
right?, who's going to question that it's
suicide?
The threat is real now, that Wolf himself may throw her
off the roof, and Maxine is genuinely frightened.
YIN MAXINE
I don't know what you mean -- there must be
some misunderstanding . . .
YANG WOLF
People will feel sorry for poor Maxine --
excuse me, poor Yin Maxine, poor little loony
Yin Surrogate Mother Maxine . . .
YIN MAXINE
I told you I wouldn't tell -- I didn't see
anything really, Nick probably deserved it, he
probably tried to kill you first, it was
self-defense, wasn't it?, I never said it was
anything other than self-defense, you wouldn't
have killed him, it wasn't anything like that,
did I ever say it was anything like that?
YANG WOLF
More mixed-up surrogate mother, poor loony
body squashed like a bug on a windshield--
YIN MAXINE
No!--
He grabs her, the plan to drag her out and throw her
off the roof.
Richard, in area H, has been attracted to spy on them (moving
from spying on E), and rushes in now to save Maxine.
