THE OLD MAN

By Charles Deemer

He is so old

His legs are weak

His shriveled lips

Can hardly speak

But with his cane

He makes his way

And very soon

He’ll pass away

My father’s dad

He knew him well

There are so many

Tales to tell

When he was young

He took a bride

Now he is old

He seems to hide

He has no friends

They all are dead

He’s very strange

Somebody said

And so you see him

All alone

His children have

Left him and gone

But he can eat

And pay his rent

And then somehow

His time is spent

He seems to wait

And wait again

Why does he wait?

He has no friends

He is so old

He soon will die

To whom can this man

Say goodbye?

But Death will take him

As her own

And then the old man

Won’t be alone
