Why do we like this site?

For the school of the month in November, we're happy to turn our eyes back southward, where we ourselves originate from. In November, we feature the official website for Aiken High School, Aiken, South Carolina (mere minutes from where we grew up in North Carolina, incidentally).

The Aiken site is more than worthy of this award for a variety of reasons. The first thing one notices upon loading the main page, however, is the simple attractiveness of the site. The colors don't clash to make reading difficult. Navigation is obviously conducted by the bar on the left-hand side of the page. The name of the site is prominently displayed. Text is mostly black on a white background. All of these add up to a very positive first impression, and first impressions are often what make someone dive further into your site or click the back button to float elsewhere on the 'net, and away.

Another major point in the AHS site's favor is that navigation bar. It really does make getting around the site a breeze. Rather than obscure navigational groupings in a too-small bar, which is sometimes a problem with sites who use this approach, each entry is clearly labeled to explain the information to which it will take the viewer. Not only is getting there easy, but the information presented is updated. The importance of such a simple thing as keeping information current cannot be overemphasized.

Finally, though, two things guaranteed that we would like the Aiken High School website enough to make it the School of the Month for Novemeber: the entire site looks equally pleasant as the first page, showing real work has gone into the organization and presentation of their pages, and the sheer volume of information presented. After viewing their site, I know the professional history of their principal. I know (and accurately) what the students of AHS ate for lunch today.

In summation, the AHS Online website won the award this month because they do everything a website should; beyond that, they do it all well.

Who are the people behind this site?

The Aiken High School site is maintained by the Internuts, a student club devoted to the 'net and advised by the school's German teacher, Mr. Lader.
