On May 25, 1864, the 325 members of the 20th Michigan began their service in the Overland Campaign by marching through Washington, D.C.

President Lincoln reviewed them from the balcony of the Willard Hotel.

They crossed the Potomac River on the Long Bridge into Alexandria Virginia.

On the right are pontoon boats which the 50th used to bridge other rivers during the Overland Campaign including Germana Ford on the Rapidan River which the 20th crossed on May 5, 1864.
