Petersburg CourthouseOn April 3, 1865, after the Confederates evacuated Petersburg, the 20th Michigan was the third unit to raise their national battle flag on this courthouse.

The First Michigan Sharpshooters raised their flag first followed by the Second Michigan.

From April 5 until Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9, the 20th Michigan was on provost occupation duty at Sutherland Station, its last service in the Civil War.

Provost duty was the military police during the Civil War. That duty was to maintain order among the soldiers and civilians. That included occupation duties.
