A Citizen's Handbook of North Carolina's Environmental Information Sources
This guide describes non-governmental groups and governmental agencies that provide environmental information and resources for North Carolina. Although most sources are located within North Carolina, selected out-of-state organizations, agencies, and publications are listed as well. Ecology and Evolution Community Archive
The Ecology and Evolution Community Archive was conceived as a long-term archive of documents useful to scientists and students in ecology and evolutionary biology. Originally a gopher site, it is one of the oldest biology-related sites on the Internet today.

Friends of the McNeil River
McNeil River State Game Sanctuary is an outgrowth of conservation efforts that began in 1955 when part of the drainage was closed to bear hunting. The closure was deemed necessary to protect extraordinary concentrations of coastal grizzlies that gathered at McNeil Falls to feed on salmon. Twelve years later, the State of Alaska further protected the area by designating it sanctuary. Friends of the McNeil River are concerned about the welfare of Alaska's world famous McNeil River State Game Sanctuary and its magnificent Grizzlies.

Haw River

IUCN/SSC African Elephant Specialist Group
Website of the African Elephant Specialist Group of the IUCN Species Survival Commission. African Elephant Database online, entire issues of the Pachyderm journal, tools for the study and mitigation of human-elephant conflict and African Elephant Bibliography.

Morgan Creek Valley Alliance
A community alliance to preserve the rich biological and cultural history of the Morgan Creek Valley. The Morgan Creek watershed contains a network of perennial and intermittent streams that drain approximately 50 square miles of hills, rocky bluffs, and bottomlands. From Morgan Creek's origin near Pickard's Mountain, the creek falls approximately 300 feet over a 17-mile run as it makes it way to the upper reaches of Jordan Lake near the intersection of Orange, Durham and Chatham counties of North Carolina.

Based in India, Neoherbal dedicates itself to provide information about Ayurveda, an ancient Indian form of preventive medication and healing, detailed information pertaining to plants used in Ayurveda, and how to make various Ayurvedic preparations easily in one's kitchen for common and uncommon ailments, and improving one's quality of life.

Online Burma/Myanmar Library
Annotated and classified links to thousands of full text documents on Burma. The Online Burma/Myanmar Library also holds the 17MB archive of the Burma Press Summary (1987-1996) compiled and edited by Hugh C. MacDougall and the 200MB archive of the reg.burma list (1993-2001).

Plant Information Center
A web-based educational initiative, PIC includes a searchable database with digitized herbarium specimens (currently gymnosperms of the Southeast), a glossary of botanical terms, both print and electronic bibliographic resources that support botanical identification, and a list of web links to major virtual herbaria worldwide. PIC is in the process of developing an "Ask the Expert" application and an "Interactive Contributory Module" that will permit users to submit botanical resources to a community store.

Plants for a Future
U.S.A. mirror of the British database of 7000 edible and other useful plants. Plants For A Future is a resource canter for rare and unusual plants, particularly those which have edible, medicinal or other uses. Search by name, common name, habitat, use, native range, family or use a preformatted search query.

Rec.Gardens.Ecosystems
Homepage of rec.gardens.ecosystems, a moderated newsgroup dedicated to discussions of the ecosystems of the home garden. A basic knowledge of these ecosystems is needed to make gardening a joint enterprise of man and nature. The page features the group's archive on a newsspool, and various links to web-based newsreaders. The FAQ of rec.gardens.ecosystems is also available at the page, both as a plain text document and as a set of HTML files. The FAQ provides a growing body of info on the group and on (the backgrounds of) organic gardening.

Sustainable Farming Connection
Where farmers find and share information, Sustainable Farming Connection helps farmers cut costs, protect the environment, build healthy soil, add value to what they sell, and stay abreast of the latest news and farm policy info of interest to the sustainable farming community. Includes features, discussion groups, links, news releases and more.
