Etree Wiki
Welcome to wiki.etree.org. etree.org is the award-winning leader in lossless digital audio distribution on the Internet! We are a community committed to providing the highest quality live concert recordings in a losslessly-compressed, downloadable format. All of the music on etree.org is free, and 100% legal to download, trade, and burn. We also assist new traders in learning to trade online through our extensive guides.

etree.org

The etree.org music community was created in the summer of 1998 for the online trading of live CD-R's. We do not trade CD-R's via regular mail. Instead, we trade by downloading losslessly compressed audio files, extracting these files, and then burning them onto a CD-R.

The etree.org community uses an independent network of file (FTP) servers that host and distribute Shorten (SHN) audio files. Shorten is our file format of choice because it uses a lossless compression scheme, and is available for a variety of operating systems. This means the digital audio files distributed via etree.org are identical to the original DAT source, and can be played on any computer. There is absolutely NO sound quality loss, or any loss of information for that matter! Every downloaded copy is an identical clone of the original DAT source.

Etree.org does not host or distribute MP3 files! While MP3 has a good sound for such a small file size, it is a lossy compression scheme. This means that when music is converted into the MP3 format, a certain amount of data is lost and cannot ever be recovered. This data loss can sometimes result as a 'swooshing' type sound in the music. For this reason, you should never make an audio CD-R from MP3 files. Etree.org has found that as CD-R's are traded, MP3-sourced discs are often mislabeled and passed along without any mention of their MP3 lineage.

Thanks to the hard work and deadication of everyone in our community, etree.org will continue to grow and set the standard in lossless digital audio distribution via the Internet!

Etree.org is run by a hardworking community of volunteers. We are a not-for-profit venture, organized by people who love the music and simply want to see it spread. People who "work" on etree.org include FTP server operators, mailing list administrators, web site designers, and the other countless number of people who seed the etree.org with their DAT tapes and compact discs. Etree.org is truly a community effort and without the support of all involved, we simply could not exist.

Gamelan Nyai Saraswati

Gamelan Nyai Saraswati is an ensemble of the Department of Music, College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina ? Chapel Hill. Gamelan is a Javanese/Indonesian word for ensemble. The word "gamel" means to hammer something in Javanese and , indeed, "hammering" or hitting is the way in which most of the different instruments in the ensemble are sounded with the exception of the two stringed instruments ? the bowed fiddle (rebab) and the plucked zither (siter) ? and the flute (suling), male chorus (gerong) and female soloists (pasindhen).

Western musicians who hear gamelan are struck both by the complexity of the relationships between the melody lines of the different instruments and, if they are aware of the "rules" of western harmony, by the almost "impressionistic" tone clusters that can be heard if the listener hears the music vertically, or tries to interpret it "harmonically". People without musical training often focus on the melifluousness of the sound and the soothing, meditative quality of some of the music. Others are excited by the multileveled interlockingness of the texture, comparing it to the experience of listening to several, incredibly good jazz solo players improvising together.

By the mid-1950s, King was performing nationally more than 300 days per year. His music draws from many genres, including swing, jazz and pop, and his guitar style has influenced some of the world's top musicians. In recognition of his achievements, King was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He has also received five honorary doctorates. King still tours internationally more than 250 days per year, including gigs at the four B.B. King's Blues Clubs located throughout the country. The majority of the items date from the mid-1970s, when Dr. Ferris first met King at Yale University. The two have maintained a relationship for three decades. More of Dr. Ferris's materials, as well as possible additions from other collections, will be added. The archive was created in April, 2004, and is an ongoing project of students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
