The White House
Health Care Reform Today
October 20, 1993
- A week before detailed legislation is sent to Capitol
Hill, the Republican National Committee has decided to
run misleading and inaccurate television ads attacking the
President's health reform plan. Why? Here's their
explanation...straight from RNC Chair Haley Barbour:
"...some in the media and the public have confused the
fact Republicans favor health care reform with the idea we
agree with Clinton's plan or find it acceptable." It is
clear that for at least some Republicans, politics are now
replacing bipartisan cooperation.
- The Haley Barbour Republicans and the special interests
they protect are running scared. They know that within
the week the President will introduce a thorough and
complete proposal to bring all Americans health security
and comprehensive benefits that can never be taken away.
The President's plan will include detailed numbers
explaining exactly how the program is paid for and exactly
where the money comes from. It lists the comprehensive
benefits that are covered and spells out the exact
protections this plan brings to individual families.
- And the President's plan is the only proposal that keeps
everything that's right about the current system in
place-- private sector health care, employer-based
coverage, choice of doctors and plans, and high quality
American medicine. And it fixes what's wrong without any
new broad-based taxes.
- Yet the RNC is trying to convince the American people
that health security and comprehensive benefits are not in
their best interests. The only group that has spent more
money on TV ads against health reform is the insurance
lobby. Ask yourself, are these people really out to
protect your interests?
- As for support, a study released Tuesday in Atlanta
shows that a majority of Georgians favor universal health
care that centers on prevention, controls costs and offers
no free rides. Georgia Health Decisions said that after
two years and interviews with more than 6,000 residents it
is clear that any reform package include coverage for
everyone.
