McKellar astrophysical plate collection

Research Area(s):

Description: Physical form of the data:

Photographic plates

Description: Content and context of data, if known:

Photographic stellar spectra exposed at the 48-inch telescope between 1962 and 1998. Handwritten log records for all the plates exist. A start has recently been made to transcribe the logs on-line.

Name of current data holder:

National Research Council (Government of Canada)

Dates associated with data:

1962 to 1998

Plates measure 1 x 9 inches or 2 x 8 inches

Data condition:

Moderate storage conditions, so stable but ageing

Risk level:

Moderate. No on-line inventory, so no publicity and therefore not much in demand.

Known access and restrictions:

Access restricted to bona fide researchers

A part-time project is currently under way to digizise selected plates using a hi-fi "PDS" scanner (an instrument designed and built for the job in the 1970s).
