  • Identity of the past was place based, along geographic lines; one had little agency to establish new identities
  • The post-spatial identity, with technologies we can access and appropriate different identities.
  • The web as a technology of the self - empowering us to write our own narratives into being
  • Are we liberated by CMC/SNS? Can we still find freedom?

[edit] Turkle

  • Why are computers spaces for identity play?
  • How do we construct this reality? What are the affordances and technologies that enable this reality?
  • Depersonalization, deindividuation and projection in CMC
  • Disconnect between natives and naturalized citizens?
  • "What will CMC do to our committment to other people? Will it satisfy our needs for connection and social participation, or will it further undermine fragile relationships?"
  • What parts of Turkle's treatment ring true today? What parts haven't aged well?
  • When computers can offload simple taks, should we constantly remind ourselves of their non-humanness? Does it matter? Does this contribute to our virtuality?
  • What happens when we start to take computers at interface value?
  • Identity as a set of "roles" to be mixed and matched
    • Play and its role in building identity
    • Screen personae as opportunity for expression
    • The "continual process of creation and recreation"
  • Erickson "the playing adult steps sideways into another reality, the playing child advances forward into new stages of mastery"
