Karen, who recently received a Ph.D. in English from UNC-CH, will be spending the summer in New York City, preparing course materials for her fall appointment in the UNC-CH Department of Dramatic Arts as a Visiting Professor. Those who have read newsbrief for years, and more recently on the Web page that she created, have Karen to thank for its consistent level of quality writing and editorial judgment. Her design ideas and eye for layout helped the OIT Review become a very popular publication during its short lifetime, and she gave the same attention to the OIT Reports and the ATNS Reports that she lends every task she undertakes. It is this determination and respect for quality that assures us that she will succeed as she moves along to her career as a professor. She will drop in here and again this summer to consult, and for that we are grateful. For her years of quality work, too often unheralded, I speak for our information technology community in saying "Thank you, Karen." The gift of over $170,000 worth of the latest Sun server technology, including an Enterprise Server 4000 with four 250Mhz processors and a gigabyte of RAM, will be used to update and improve the popular SunSITE program at UNC-CH. MetaLab is a unique collection of projects exploring issues and applications in digital libraries, distributed information discovery and retrieval, collaborative environments, cyberpublishing, and cybercasting. It is a joint project of UNC-CHÕs School of Journalism and Mass Communication, School of Information and Library Science, and Academic Technology and Networks, with project sponsorship from Sun Microcomputing Systems, Cisco Systems, Educom, and others. For more information, browse URL http://sunsite.unc.edu/pjones/MetaLab/ The SunSITE program began in 1992 with a small gift from Sun and quickly became international, involving over 40 universities and research groups. Designed and developed at UNC-CH, SunSITE investigates and implements research in electronic publishing, digital libraries, and networked multimedia. The current UNC-CH server, SunSITE.unc.edu, handles over a million requests every day for information of all kinds, from free software to information on herbal medicine, electronic music, and the history of the American South.
