Nope. Sunsite has had a few problems during the last week and I am not surprised that they showed up for people trying to use ftpmail. Everything should be fine now (or in the next couple of days as name caches time out) If you don't want to hear a sorrowful tale hit 'n' now... I went to Educom (a big conference about computers, networks, and educators) last week; i just returned. I went to this conference to announce the sunsite project and the work that we are doing with information services, especially WAIS. The main part of this was doing lots o' demos to impress suit-types who had never seen what i was talking about. So everything relied on the net working. So, first there were problems with getting the conference's T1 line to JHU that would put us on the Net. So we are getting kinda antsy, but then finally the network people tell us that they have everything working. But still we cant get through to sunsite. We bitch more at the MCI people (I mumble something about going back to AT&T :) ) and they tell us that there must be something wrong at UNC. No way, we respond. The entire campus can't be off the Net! Famous last words. We called home to be told that an 8 inch water main in the room that contains the head of UNC's network; UNC's bridge to the rest of the world had broken, dumping an entire water tower ointo the room. But nothing to worry about, because the rushing water broke the superheated steam pipes, which sent 250+ degree celsius steam onto the Ciscos, melting them. Wonderful. What a great time for this. Not to mention all the people who could fix it were at Educom or Interop! So, in a panic we try to rig some sort of pnambic demo with the pieces of software we can gather from the rest of the net (we had planned on retrieving the pieces of software we had written and were going to demo over the net) When one of my fearless leaders suggests an idea that had never occurred to me: Why not just move sunsite? So we call back and have some truely wonderful people pack up the entire kit n' caboodle and using TruckNet and the I-40 protocol (never underestimate the bandwith of 5 gigs of disk moving 65 miles per hour!) down the road 20 miles to MCNC where Alan Clegg (thanks abc!) helps them set up the machine, just in the nick of time sunsite was back on line just as the bigwigs from Sun show up. Yay! :) So, UNC is back on the net now, and SunSite is back in his usual home, but it has had a couple of quick IP number changes, and one of them (the one that was at MCNC) was not handling reverse name resolving correctly (which was the problem with ftpmail I think.) But all seems to end well, and the conference was a success. But I'm so behind... :( jem. --Jonathan Magid jem@SunSite.unc.edu SunSite Administrator Virtual pizza Delivery (tm)::faxed in 30 cycles or less or you get it ----- -----------------------------------FREE!!!-----------------------
