Hot Java README and link to the software on SunSITE

This directory contains version 1.0 alpha3 of the Java(tm) language technology and a prototype World-Wide Web browser called HotJava(tm).

This is an *alpha* release of the browser, focussed on highlighting the technology of "executable content" on the Internet. As such, it is not intended for use as your only WWW browser; it is still missing many common browser features, and will of course have some bugs. It *will* serve to demonstrate the new active interface ideas possible with the technology, and it will allow you to create and compile your own Java content.

There are binary versions of HotJava in this directory that will run on Solaris 2.3 (or above) systems running OpenWindows and Microsoft Windows NT. Other ports are in progress.

To download the Alpha3 release for Solaris, use this URL ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/sun-info/hotjava/ or use anonymous ftp and proceed as follows:
> binary
> get hj-alpha3.tar.Z
> quit
Once you have the file on your home computer uncompress it by:
$ zcat hj-alpha2.tar.Z | tar xf -
The compressed tar file is just over 4.8 Meg. Uncompressed and unpacked it will take up 10.8 Meg (most of that is on-line documentation).

You can download the HotJava/NT Alpha2 release, simply follow this hotjava-alpha2-nt-x86.exe link. You can also download it via ftp using the steps described above. You should then type

hotjava-alpha2-nt-x86

at the command line. The self-extracting archive will create a directory called hotjava, which will contain the appropriate binary and README files.

NOTE: HotJava/NT will NOT yet run on Windows 95.
